Understanding Basic Arithmetic
Addition (+)
Combining two or more numbers to find their total. Example: 5 + 3 = 8. Addition is commutative, meaning 5 + 3 = 3 + 5.
Subtraction (−)
Finding the difference between two numbers. Example: 10 - 4 = 6. Subtraction is not commutative: 10 - 4 ≠ 4 - 10.
Multiplication (×)
Repeated addition of the same number. Example: 4 × 3 = 12 (same as 4 + 4 + 4). Multiplication is commutative: 4 × 3 = 3 × 4.
Division (÷)
Splitting a number into equal parts. Example: 12 ÷ 3 = 4.Note: Division by zero is undefined and will show an error.
💡 Interesting Math Facts
1. Zero is Special
Adding zero to any number gives the same number. Multiplying any number by zero gives zero. But dividing by zero is impossible!
2. Order of Operations
Remember PEMDAS: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication/Division (left to right), Addition/Subtraction (left to right).
3. The Number One
Multiplying any number by 1 gives the same number. Dividing any number by 1 also gives the same number. One is the multiplicative identity!
4. Negative Numbers
A negative times a negative equals a positive. For example: (-5) × (-3) = 15. This is one of math's most useful rules!
