How to Convert Fractions to Decimals
The line in a fraction means "divide". Here is how to use that to your advantage.
Fractions and decimals are two sides of the same coin. Whether you're baking, doing construction work, or just helping with homework, knowing how to switch between them is a superpower.
The Simple Method
To convert a fraction to a decimal, you simply divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number). That's it!
The Magic Formula
Numerator ÷ Denominator = Decimal
Common Examples
Dealing with Repeating Decimals
Sometimes, the division never ends. The digits start repeating forever. These are called repeating decimals.
- 11/3 becomes 0.33333...
- 22/3 becomes 0.66666...
Mixed Numbers to Decimals
For mixed numbers like 2 1/4, you have two easy options:
Option 1: Keep the Whole
Keep the "2" separate. Convert 1/4 to 0.25. Combine them to get 2.25.
Option 2: Make it Improper
Turn 2 1/4 into 9/4. Then divide 9 by 4 to get 2.25.
Why Convert?
Decimals are often easier to compare than fractions. For example, which is bigger: 5/8 or 4/7?
It's hard to tell at a glance. But if we convert them:
- 5 ÷ 8 = 0.625
- 4 ÷ 7 ≈ 0.571
Now it's obvious that 0.625 is larger, so 5/8 is the winner.
