How to Calculate Fractions: A Step-by-Step Guide
Learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions easily. Master the rules of numerators, denominators, and mixed numbers.
1. Adding & Subtracting Fractions
The golden rule for adding or subtracting fractions is: You must have a common denominator.
The Steps:
- Find the Least Common Denominator (LCD).
- Convert both fractions to equivalent fractions with the LCD.
- Add or subtract the numerators.
- Keep the denominator the same.
- Simplify the result if possible.
Example: 1/4 + 1/2. The LCD is 4. Convert 1/2 to 2/4. Now add: 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4.
2. Multiplying Fractions
Multiplication is the easiest operation. You do not need a common denominator.
- Multiply the numerators (top numbers) together.
- Multiply the denominators (bottom numbers) together.
- Simplify the resulting fraction.
Example: 1/2 × 3/4 = (1×3)/(2×4) = 3/8.
3. Dividing Fractions
Division requires one extra step called "Keep, Change, Flip."
Keep, Change, Flip:
- Keep the first fraction as it is.
- Change the division sign to multiplication.
- Flip the second fraction (this is called the reciprocal).
- Then multiply as usual.
Example: 1/2 ÷ 1/4 becomes 1/2 × 4/1 = 4/2 = 2.
