Understanding the Formulas

Devine Formula (1974)

Originally developed to calculate drug dosages, this is now the most widely used formula for ideal body weight.

Men: 50kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5ft
Women: 45.5kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5ft

Robinson Formula (1983)

A modification of the Devine formula, often used as a slightly different standard for medical calculations.

Men: 52kg + 1.9kg per inch over 5ft
Women: 49kg + 1.7kg per inch over 5ft

Miller Formula (1983)

Often yields a lower ideal weight estimate, which some experts believe is more realistic for modern health standards.

Men: 56.2kg + 1.41kg per inch over 5ft
Women: 53.1kg + 1.36kg per inch over 5ft

Hamwi Formula (1964)

One of the earliest and simplest formulas, still popular for quick mental estimates.

Men: 48kg + 2.7kg per inch over 5ft
Women: 45.5kg + 2.2kg per inch over 5ft
